It is important to register each year for the Special Needs Shelter prior to an emergency where evacuations have been ordered. If you would like to register for this year, you can obtain an application from Hardee County Emergency Management, Florida Department of Health in Hardee, or your Home Health Agency.
Special Needs Shelters are reserved for individuals who:
- Are medically dependent on electricity.
- Need assistance due to mobility issues.
- Need assistance to perform activities of daily living.
Planning well ahead of an emergency or disaster is very important and the Special Needs Shelter should be considered the last resort when making your plans. It is important to remember that shelters will not be able to provide the same level of convenience or privacy as a family member’s home.
Submitting a Special Needs Shelter application does not automatically qualify you for the Shelter. You may be able to go to a general population shelter in an emergency. If your medical needs exceed the capability of the Special Needs Shelter you may need to discuss other options with family or healthcare providers.
Submit your application early each year for consideration. This will enable you to have your plans in place prior to an emergency.
